Richard Skipper entered my life and times through the generous efforts of Willis Moore and Bruce Phillips, both exciting, charming and gifted cabaret performers themselves. Willis had decided to import the long running and elegantly touching 'Teddy Cares' holiday shows to San Francisco to raise money for Shanti and to obtain Teddy Bears for children in the pediatric AIDS facility at San Francisco General Hospital. This heartfelt fundraising effort was created by 'Bawdway' legend Ruby Rims who Willis induced to open the first San Francisco version of this great cabaret gift from the artist/performers to kids in need of any and all ages. Bruce Phillips asked New York Star Richard Skipper to join the San Francisco casts and the rest is history. Richard Skipper continues his giving with Teddy Cares, Shanti and dozens of other wonderful agencies and organizations that provide support to the hundreds of thousands still battling this scourge. Richard Skipper is more like Carol Channing than the original and a gifted comedienne and chanteuse just 'borrowing' the fabled Channing trademarks. Richard brings an edgy and vital authenticity to every line delivered in dialogue or song, and moves about the stage like a proud lioness guarding her brood. MAC award winner more than once, recognized as one of the finest impersonators, and a cabaret Star in his own right, Richard Skipper is also the consummate host of a major variety show with his superb timing, delivery and command of the stage and music. There's no vulgarity or tabloid humor in his shows because Richard Skipper truly worships Carol Channing and the work that is her universal trademark. His salute to Ms. Channing is really a loving and nostalgic homage to the best of those classic Broadway Blockbusters that today are little more than derivative remakes of the brilliant and risky originals the American public still reveres. Richard Skipper has almost flawlessly brought Channing's Star persona back to life and is introducing her work to new and adoring audiences of all ages. Carol Channing is being interpreted and impersonated by a master artist who uses his own voice to complement and sometimes go beyond what Channing originally infused the work with in voice and inflection. Crowd pleasing show tunes like "Hey Look Me Over" and "Broadwaybaby", come off with integrity and that seductive, throaty whisper she copyrighted, but he also superbly captures Ms. Channing's unique speaking voice as well. Other signature treats from the Richard Skipper playlist include "Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend", and the obligatory and show stopping "Hello Dolly". Richard hopes to be back in San Francisco this winter for several performances and I urge you to do yourself a favor and drop anything else and go see Richard Skipper anywhere you can.
